If you don't like to cry during movies or hate Lars Von Trier then definitely skip it.Dancer in the Dark is a 2000 musical drama film written and directed by Lars von Trier. If you like ultra-depressing movies and are prepared to cry and ruin the rest of your day then go for it. Then I cried even more when I went back to watching it. To be honest I took a break half way because I was crying so much. Not because it's bad or boring, but because of how heartbreaking it is. I'm not sure that I would recommend it though. It's probably one of my favorite movies now.
Dancer in the dark movie#
You could say it is emotionally manipulative, and I have some nitpicks like the way it was shot and some other things, but Bjork was so great, I cried so much and I just loved this movie so much that I would feel wrong giving it anything less than five stars. It also might be the most depressing movie I've ever seen in general. This is definitely the most bleak musical I've ever seen, and probably the most bleak musical ever made.

In a musical, nothing dreadful ever happens. So what are your thoughts? Is it the most depressing movie you've seen? Is it the most depressing musical ever made? How great was Bjork? Literally just thinking about her talking to the musical director about adding in some dancing for the nun part makes me start crying.Īnyway, I'm gonna copy and paste a review I wrote on letterboxd for it now, but I'd like to hear your opinions! I watch a lot of movies so I usually don't go make a post on this sub after every one I have watched, in fact I've never made a post like this, but I thought for this one I had to because it had such an effect on me.

She played the sweet and innocent character perfectly. I've never been a fan of Bjork, just because I've not listened to her music or been exposed to her, but she was amazing in this. I watched it for the first time alone a few days ago and cried a lot, I watched it again with someone else last night and figured I wouldn't cry since it was my second time and I was with someone else, but nope, cried just as much. What is r/movies thoughts on this film? I'm a fan of Von Trier and depressing movies are my favorite kind of movies, but holy shit, I had no idea it would be this depressing.
